Ancient history tackles the rise and fall of the Tribe of Ancients, the popularization of the Star Religion, and the emergence of the Mushroom Kingdom and Koopa Kingdom in the Timeline.

Prehistory goes back to the creation of the universe and its even more ancient civilizations. Modern history rolls into the births of the main characters of the franchise and the events of the games.

  • Cyan: Events that lack a definite placement, but which have a known range.
  • Yellow: Events that are likely simultaneous, or whose order cannot be determined exactly for one reason or another.
  • Pink: Events interpreted through theories from the Marioverse community.

Ancient history

Ancient Era

(3,000 - 2,000 years ago)

  • A tribe of Shamans, known as the Tribe of Ancients, lives in Lineland.[1] (Super Paper Mario)
  • At some point, likely long before these events, the Ancients learn dimensional magic
  • The Ancients get acquainted with humans from Mario's world, causing many humans to join the tribe
  • A Master Magician amongst the Tribe of Ancients invents Pixls[2] (3000 years before Super Paper Mario)
    • The Master Magician loses his wife and son in an accident, before his daughter falls ill.
    • The Master Magician uses the Dark Prognosticus to put the soul of his daughter into a Pixl
    • At some point, the Great Magician’s daughter is horrified by her fathers deeds and steals the Dark Prognosticus before going into hiding
    • The Great Magician dies and his pupils inherit the original 12 Pixls
    • The 12 pupils use the knowledge of the 12 original Pixls to create many more and the Pixls are used by the ancients to build a massive interdimensional empire.
    • Using their new-found power, the Ancients manage to convince many more of the true power of the stars

The Mushroom Kingdom rises

  • The monarchy of the Kingdom of Shrooms is replaced by a family of humans
    • The magic-wielding human family, known as the Toadstool family, replaces the descendants of King Shroomses as the leaders of the kingdom and a connection is established between the Tribe of Ancients, the Star Spirits in Star Haven and the house of Toadstool.
    • The Kingdom of Shrooms becomes the Mushroom Kingdom
    • The Vellumentals are forgotten in favor of the Star Spirits
    • The Mushroom Kingdom moves its capital from the Palace to Mushroom Castle, located close to Shooting Star Summit, and Toad Town is established[3][4]
    • The Star Spirits gift a chest to both the Ancients and to the royal family of the Mushroom Kingdom, which have the power to transfer items between each other[5][6] (Paper Mario)
    • The Dark Star is dug up out of the ground and sealed away in Toad Town Tunnels by the Star Sprites[7] (Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story}

The unnamed desert human kingdom

  • The Tribe of Ancients bring a human family to power in the desert close to the scattered Koopa Kingdoms
  • Serpci rules this kingdom at some point. (Luigi's Mansion 3)

Miscellaneous

Collapse Era

  • The Pixl Uprising takes place, causing much of the Ancients’ empire to collapse[10] (2000 years before Super Paper Mario)
  • The descendants of the apprentices of the Great Magician fight back
    • With the original 12 Pixls, the descendants of the apprentices beat back the Pixl Queen’s forces
    • 11 of the apprentices’ descendants die, with the last one defeating the Pixl queen at last, but his Pixl dies
  • The last descendant steals the Dark Prognosticus from the Pixl Queen and the Tribe of Darkness breaks off from the rest of the Ancients.
    • The remaining descendant is horrified by the past he just found out and steals the Dark Prognosticus, meaning for another tragedy like the Pixl Uprising to never happen again
    • He flees to a forested dimension, where he builds a castle together with other former members of the Tribe of Ancients and starts living there
    • The Tribe of Darkness is now separate from the Tribe of Ancients
  • The Tribe of Darkness is shunned
    • The elders of the Ancients shun the Tribe of Darkness for taking the Dark Prognosticus and the Tribe of Darkness becomes taboo.
    • The creation of Pixls is banned, making the Ancients unable to ever weave their empire back together.
    • Some members of the Tribe of Darkness stayed behind, now integrating into the rest of the Tribe of Ancients

The Dark Ages

(2,000 - ~1,000 years ago)

Flora Kingdom[11]

The Ancients prepare a plan (1,500 years ago)

  • The Sages of the Tribe of Ancients decide to make a plan to counteract the Dark Prognosticus’s prediction of the end of the world, with Merlumina leading the Tribe of Ancients.[12]
    • Merlimbis and Merlumina create the Purity Heart to counteract the Chaos Heart and splits it into 8 pieces
    • Merlight designs Flipside and Flopside, before it’s built by the Ancients, led by Merlumina.
    • Wracktail is created as a prototype guardian for one of the Pure Hearts.[13] Fracktail is later created by the Ancients, or wished for by Wracktail himself.[14]
    • The Ancients test the guardians of the Pure Hearts in the Pits of 100 trials
  • Grambi and Jaydes meet through work.[15] Hagnes and Jaydes compete over Grambi's affections, but Jaydes won in the end.[16][17]
  • The Ancients scatter the Pure Hearts across dimensions to have it attract to the right guardians
    • The Red Pure Heart is attracted to Merlight in Flipside
    • The Orange Pure Heart is attracted to Fracktail
    • The Yellow Pure Heart is attracted to a Merlee
    • The Green Pure Heart is attracted to a castle in the Bitlands once used by the Ancients. The Ancients seal the Pure Heart inside of it.
    • The Blue Pure Heart is attracted to Queen Squirpina XIV
    • The Navy Pure Heart is attracted to King Croacus I
    • Merlumina's sister brings the Purple Heart to the Sammer Kingdom dimensions and it attracts to the king, with whom she falls in love with and has 100 children
    • The White Pure Heart is attracted to Jaydes and Grambi
  • The guardians' power to protect the Pure Hearts are tested in the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials with experiments using monsters from many dimensions.[18]
    • The guardians pass their trials and become guardians.
    • Murals are painted in honor of the guardians in both Pits of 100 Trials
  • The Flopside Pit of 100 Trials is used for experiments with the power of shadows, also using monsters from many dimensions.
    • Shadoo is sealed in the Flopside Pit
  • The guardians return to their home dimensions
  • The original Pixls are also sealed away
  • Grambi and Jaydes turn their Pure Heart into a Nimbi and raise it as their child so that no one could steal it
    • A trusted Nimbi, close to Grambi, tries to take the heart and betrays Grambi, whereafter he is sealed underneath the Underwhere and becomes Bonechill.
  • Squirpina XIV seals her Pure Heart in the Whoa Zone. She possibly perishes in the process
    • She puts her son, Squirps, into hibernation, so that he can help the hero 1,500 years later.
    • Left without a ruler, Squirpia collapses
  • The Yold Ruins are created and patterned with the iconography of Fracktail
    • Merlumina guards the Orange Pure Heart and takes it with her to her resting place
    • Fracktail is placed as the guardian
  • Some information on the process of Pixl creation is left behind for Merlon to later use it

  • Her daughter, Rosalina, is heartbroken. She meets a Luma at Gateway Galaxy and she decides to go to space with it to find its mother
    • Rosalina and the Luma create the observatory
    • They meet more Lumas
    • The Luma transforms into a comet that can travel at the speed of light and bring the observatory across the galaxy
    • Rosalina decides to come back every 100 years

The Darkening

  • The son of King Croacus I wilts, causing Croacus I to grow bitter
    • This begins a reign of fear known as the Darkening (1182 years ago)
    • His daughter, critical of his policies, is imprisoned
  • His daughter is freed from her imprisonment by the people and a coup d’etat takes place, where she replaces King Croacus I and is crowned Queen Croacus II (1130 years ago)
    • Taxes are reduced and studies to cure diseases begin
    • Croacus I writes the Flictionarian, an account of the prehistoric history of the Floro Sapiens

Koopa Kingdom

    • King MacFright’s life

The Luffs (1,000 years before Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door)

  • The Luffs create the Marvelous Compass and quickly build an empire
  • The Marvelous Compass curses the Luffs for their misuse of the object and the empire collapses, almost completely wiping out the Luffs
    • Only a few survive, who break up the compass to spread it across the land
    • They make a premonition that a hero will one day come to recollect the pieces of the compass
    • Prince Cranberry takes one piece and rests in the Rapturous Ruins, waiting for a hero to come

The Even Darker Ages

(1,000 years ago)

  • Cortez and his pirate crew are active, often raiding the Ancient City, striking fear into the hearts of its citizens.[21]

Shadow Queen's rule

  • The Shadow Queen appears in the Ancient City from a place known as the Dark Beyond. She darkens the skies and causes disasters to sink the city under the sea in one night
  • The Shadow Queen takes the palace at the center of the city as her den, now known as the Palace of Shadow. The rest of the structures that sink underground, but remain relatively intact, form what will later be known as Rogueport Sewers. The Palace of Shadow is at one point remodeled into a vast labyrinth
  • Many monsters join the army of the Shadow Queen as she spreads her influence across the land, aiming to conquer the entire world.[22] They attack various places, stealing treasure from all over the world, before bringing it back to the Palace of Shadow. The monsters that joined her army around this time likely include the dragons Hooktail, Gloomtail and Bonetail, who fly across the land to terrorize the population
    • 'Amongst the places the Shadow Queen initially attacks is Petal Meadows, where her minions attack Petalburg. A Young Toad boy in Petalburg defends his fellow villagers, for which he is hailed as a hero
    • 'The villagers of Petalburg build Shhwonk Fortress to hide in whenever a monster attacks. They use Bristles, Clefts, and a Thwomp to guard the structure
  • The Shadow Queen uses the essence of the heavens to create the Crystal Stars with the purpose of extending her power even further.[23] 7 castles are built in each surrounding country to house the Crystal Stars, including Petal Meadows, where Hooktail Castle is built with Hooktail’s size in mind, so that she can be stationed to guard the castle[24]
    • Followers of the Shadow Queen, calling themselves the Great Ones, write down the story of how the Shadow Queen created the Crystal Stars in between the lines of the riddles in the Riddle Tower in the Palace of Shadow. They are noted to have known “the secrets of the heavens”.
  • The Shadow Queen attacks the Boggly Woods for the first time. A Wise Goomba who lives in Boggly Woods uses her knowledge of all the monsters in the world to help the denizens of the region defeat them. She starts thinking of a way to banish all monsters from the world
  • The Pit of 100 Trials is built and filled with terrifying monsters from across the world, used by the Shadow Queen to throw in those who oppose her. Bonetail is sealed in the lowest floor of the pit.[25]
  • A Stalwart Koopa who traveled the world alone, decides to fight the Shadow Queen's forces, but is eventually trapped and captured in the process. A Boo Lass amongst the Shadow Queen’s army falls for the Koopa Troopa and uses her magic to free him
  • The Boo determines that she and the Stalwart Koopa can’t beat the Shadow Queen alone. So, using her magic, she brings together the Young Toad, the Wise Goomba, the Stalwart Koopa and herself, before the four head for the Shadow Queen's den
    • The heroes reach the Palace of Shadow and engage in battle with the Shadow Queen. The heroes take the stars from the queen and destroy her body, before using the Crystal Stars to seal her soul in a tomb. The Shadow Queen casts a curse on them right before being sealed, which will seal their souls in chests upon letting go of the last Crystal Star in their possession.
    • The heroes leave the tomb in the deepest part of the palace, before using the Crystal Stars to seal the door to the Palace of Shadow shut, only able to be opened again by the Crystal Stars. Gloomtail is also sealed within the palace
    • The heroes, fearing the seal would weaken and one day break, create a magical map that could be used to gather the Crystal Stars. To prevent it from being used for evil, they sealed it in a magical chest that could only be opened by the pure of heart.
  • Cortez is betrayed by one of his crew and sails off to Keelhaul Key with those who remained loyal to him
  • Flavio's ancestor steals the Skull Gem and leaves the island, meaning Cortez and the rest of the crew are stuck on Keelhaul Key
  • Cortez and his crew settle down in Pirate's Grotto.
  • The four heroes separate to spread the Crystal Stars across the world
    • The Gold Star is brought to an unknown place
    • The Crystal Star is placed in Rogueport Sewers
    • The Wise Goomba goes to Boggly Woods, where she hollows out the Great Tree to ensure the Punis are safe from monsters. They take on the duty of the Emerald Star in exchange, promising to give it to a worthy hero one day
    • The Wise Goomba’s last Crystal Star is taken by Hooktail and the Goomba’s soul is sealed in a Black Chest that’s placed inside the dungeon of Hooktail’s castle
    • The Boo Lass brings the Ruby Star to the Creepy Steeple, transforming into a Black Chest in Twilight Town
    • The Young Toad collapses while traveling, before being saved by a priest, most likely of Poshley Sanctum. He gives the priest the Garnet Star, before transforming into a Black Chest in Rogueport Sewers. The priest takes the Garnet Star to a hidden location, likely the secret room in Poshley Sanctum, before placing a decoy in the main part of the sanctum to distract evildoers[26]
    • The Stalwart Koopa takes a nap on Keelhaul Key, before Cortez steals the Sapphire Star, transforming the Koopa into a Black Chest. Cortez then throws the stone in his pile of treasure, not knowing its true value
    • Cortez dies, the rest of his crew spending the rest of their days on Keelhaul Key. The souls of Cortez and his crew linger on Keelhaul Key, cursing anyone who visits
  • A prophecy is made that, when 1,000 years later the sky grows dark once again, a hero, clad in red and blue, will collect the 7 Crystal Stars and use them to defeat the Shadow Queen once and for all
    • The makers of the prophecy likely build the pipe that connects Hooktail's Castle to an area close to the pipe connecting Petal Meadows to Rogueport Sewers, likely for the prophesied hero to one day find and access. They create the Moonstone and the Sunstone to seal the pipe, before hiding the stones in Shhwonk Fortress
    • The makers of the prophecy likely make the Blue Pipes in Rogueport Sewers for the hero to easily travel to Petalburg, the Great Tree, Poshley Heights, and Keelhaul Key

Rise of the Dark Star

  • The Dark Star is dug up out of the ground and, after many years, sealed away in Toad Town Tunnels by the Star Sprites[27][28]

The Star Cures (1,000 years before Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story)

  • The Star Sages are given the Star Cures
    • Chakron, after taking the Star Cure, assumes a pose to listen to the stars[29]
  • At some point, the connection between the Stars and the Mushroom Kingdom fades[30]

Crystal Palace is abandoned

  • Madame Merlar is born somewhere around Shiver Mountain[31]
  • Madame Merlar has children[32]
  • Crystal Palace is abandoned, with the official reason given being due to the snow and ice[33][34]
  • Madam Merlar seals herself in the shrine on Shiver Mountain to guard the way to Crystal Palace [35]
  • A bucket and a scarf used to access Shiver Mountain are passed down by the leadership of Shiver City and Starborn Valley respectively[36][37]

Post-Dark Age Era

(~1,000 - ~400 years ago)

Chuckola Cola Inc. is founded (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga)

Rogueport

  • Long after the ruins of the Shadow Queen’s den fade into history, criminals from all over the world settle where the Ancient City once stood and found Rogueport
  • Beldam, a surviving servant of the Shadow Queen, was commanded by the Shadow Queen to reawaken her and find a Peach to serve as her new body. Beldam at one point obtains the chest containing the Magical Map and starts spreading rumors of a treasure in the Palace of Shadow to beckon people towards the place so that they will unknowingly reawaken the Shadow Queen. The true history of the area still spreads through the town as legend, including the prophecy of the hero
  • Most historians start claiming the Ancient City fell due to a natural disaster

Antique Era

(~400 - ~100 years ago)

Treevils

Croacus III

  • Croacus II has a child (329 years before Super Paper Mario)
  • Croacus II wilts (328 years ago)
  • Because of Croacus III’s young age, a regent is appointed to rule in his place
  • Croacus III is great at poetry and art, he writes Ice Rose (291 years ago)
  • The king suddenly wilts, no reason ever being given officially, causing some to suspect conspiracy (231 years ago)
  • The regent is crowned as Croacus IV

Boo's Mansion

Dark Bloo Inn

  • Dark Bloo Inn opens (~200 years before before Paper Mario: Color Splash)
  • 6 Toad Friends made an oath to have a tea party there, but right before they could the clock broke and they fell into a deep depression, their tea party wants never fulfilled

The S.S. Chuckola

  • The S.S. Chuckola sinks (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga)
  • The crew ends up at the bottom of the sea and starves to death
  • At some point, the sea dries up, turning the area intoTeehee Valley and exposing the ship to dry land

  1. "The red door leads to the land of the Ancients"
  2. Carson: "Do you know how the Pixls were born? I heard that the Pixls were created by one of the Ancients, a Great Magician, 3000 years ago. By transferring a special spirit into a vessel, a Pixl would be born. It is said that the Great MAgician created 12 Pixls before he died. Even after the Great Magician's death, his pupils continued to study the Pixls... And developed techniques to create many more Pixls based on the original 12. From then on, the propagated Pixls were used as intelligent tools. The Ancients had seen unprecedented harmony and prosperity due to the work of the abundant Pixls."
  3. The North American manual refers to the Palace as a former royal family residence. Seeing at the Palace resides in the Mushroom Kingdom, and it shares the same dome-like tops of previous Kingdom of Shrooms architecture, it's very likely that this refers to a Kingdom of Shrooms royal family
  4. The Mushroom Kingdom's growing focus towards the Star Spirits religion would logically lead to its capital moving close to where communication with the Star Spirits would be more accessible
  5. Princess Peach: "This is a mysterious treasure chest that's been passed down through generations of my family here at the castle... ...This chest is connected to another mysterious chest somewhere in the Mushroom Kingdom. They say you can put things in this chest and take them out of the other chest. Isn't that, well, mysterious?"
  6. The other box lies within one of the Shamans. Given the theorized close relationship between the Mushroom Kingdom royal family and the Ancients during this period, and the box's star emblem, this box being a gift from the Star Spirits seems likely.
  7. Happens sometime after the Kingdom of Shrooms becomes the Mushroom Kingdom and Toad Town is built
  8. Instant Tutanramen: "It's been 3,000 years since someone poured in the hot water. The noodles may be a bit soggy"
  9. Theory: The Tribe of Ancients Built the TTYD Ancient City
  10. Carson: "Suddenly, a giant Pixl referring to itself as the "Pixl Queen" appeared before them... And ordered all the Pixls to revolt against the humans."
  11. The Flora Kingdom would have already been established before the Ancients would give one of its kings a Pure Heart. One of the Floro Sapiens even corroborates this fact by using the "1,500 years" timeframe as many non-Floro Sapiens have repeated, meaning that Floro Sapiens don't have a different sense of time.
  12. Merlumina's Window Tattle: "Merlumina, one of the 4 Sages of the Tribe of Ancients’ is written on the stained glass. She was the wisest of the 4 sages and was the leader of the Ancients..."
  13. JPN Wracktail Tattle: "He can fly in the air and swoop down to attack you with his giant mouth. A prototype of Fracktail of the Yold Desert thought to be an experiment before the Ancients built Fracktail."
  14. JPN Wracktail's Catch Card: "Fracktail's father who resides somewhere in this world. He fights the same way as Fracktail does, but is much stronger than his son."
  15. Grambi Tattle: "That's Grambi... He governs The Overthere as the chief of the Nimbis... He met Jaydes of The Underwhere through work, and they soon had Luvbi..."
  16. Hagnes: "But... then he rejected me. My rival had already won his heart, it seemed... ...And the name of the fellow I was after? ...Grambi. He lives far above us in The Overthere."
  17. Grambi's Tattle mentions him and Jaydes having Luvbi "soon" after they met eachother, so this event happens fairly recently.
  18. Garson: "But the Pit was actually used by the Ancients to study the power to protect the Pure Hearts... It seems that they used fearsome monsters in these experiments. That’s why it’s teeming with monsters and creatures from across the different worlds."
  19. Theory: Rosalina is Mushroom Kingdom Royalty
  20. Ghost Container description: "Rumor has it that this Greenie comes from the middle ages, where he was a knight searching for a princess. Sadly, wherever he went, she always seemed to be in another castle."
  21. Wonky: "About a thousand years ago, there was a pirate king called Cortez on these seas. He raided this city often, striking fear into the hearts of its inhabitants..."
  22. There's a misconception that she created her army, but that is never said anywhere in the game. Most of her minions are also just natural species we see elsewhere in the game, which indicates they just joined her army or were in some cases forced to join her army.
  23. Grifty: "In order to increase its already formidable power… the demon created Crystal Stars to hold the essence of the heavens. One of these stars was placed in each country to exert the demon’s influence. One of the castles used to guard these stars still stands in Petal Meadows."
  24. Map description of Hooktail's Castle: "A massive castle built to accommodate Hooktail’s bulk. It’s full of lethal traps."
  25. This happened after the Shadow Queen first attacked the Boggly Woods, because we can find enemies from the Boggly Woods in the pit. Furthermore, the Stalwart Koopa is not killed, he is just trapped and imprisoned according to Grifty's story, which would mean they were planning some sort of punishment. Because the pit was used specifically for people who disobeyed the Shadow Queen, we can assume that this was the plan with the Stalwart Koopa, meaning that the pit was built before he arrived.
  26. According to the story, (in the Japanese version) a priest took the last Crystal Star from the Young Toad and hid it in a distant place no one could find it. Since priests often attend churches or temples, and Poshley Sanctum, is a temple devoted to the stars, this would give a fitting origin for the priest. The Crystal Star we find in Poshley Sanctum is also hidden in a secret room, which further strengthens this connection.
  27. Happens sometime after the Kingdom of Shrooms becomes the Mushroom Kingdom and Toad Town is built, but before the connection between the Mushroom Kingdom and the Stars fades
  28. Peach: "Fearing that, the Star Sprites that watch over us sacrificed much over many years..."
  29. Chakron: "And how long have I surfed? A thousand years."
  30. The Star Cures being given to the Star Sages is the last time the Stars intervened directly with the Mushroom Kingdom until modern times that we know of
  31. Madame Merlar's long story that Mario falls asleep to begins with her specifying something terrible happened on the mountain one day when she was still young. This means that she lived around Shiver Mountain.
  32. Madam Merlar is the ancestor of Merlon and his family, meaning she had children before she died.
  33. Goombario: "The official line on this palace is that it's temporarily closed because of the snow and ice..."
  34. It would make sense for the real reason that this palace was closed down to be because the stars fell out of relevance because people forgot about the true importance of the stars, because Merle sais that the Crystal Palace was once a place built in worship to the stars, but faded from people's memories.
  35. Madam Merlar: "At last...it is Mario! I'm glad you found this place. I've been expecting you. Hm hm hm ho ho... Do you find it strange that I know of you? My name is Madam Merlar. I am a messenger of the stars. You know Merlon and Merle well. I am their ancestor. The stars spoke to me of you through my dreams... They said you would come to the shrine on Shiver Mountain. It is here that I guard the way to the Crystal Palace."
  36. Mayor Penguin: "This bucket has been passed down through the years in Shiver City"
  37. Merle: "This scarf has been passed down through many generations in Starborn Valley"
  38. Bowser Jr.'s Journey profile: "Trees that lived for hundreds of years before they became monstrous."
  39. Theory: The Three Sisters Owned Haunted Towers
  40. Dr. Potter from Luigi's Mansion 3 is a gardener that grows flytraps. The abandoned labs and flytraps in the Haunted Towers may have been grown by him
  41. The areas seen around Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon are often repeated to be abandoned; not owned by the ghosts. The appearance of tools hastily dropped on the floor insinuates that an event happened that would necessitate a mass evacuation
