Personality

Donkey Kong's been first described in Donkey Kong Country as "the king of swing, the thrilla gorilla, the prime primate".[1] His trademark strength has saved him a bunch of times,[2] scaring his rivals,[3] and he sometimes spends the day training himself to invent new moves.[4] As of right now, he's considered the king (or lord)[5] of the jungle,[6] overwhelming his opponents with his jungle instincts.[7] He'll always work together with his partners and friends to restore peace to DK Island.[8]

He's the leader of the Kongs,[9] and is willing to risk his life to save both his friends,[10] his island, and his bananas.[11] Donkey Kong's strength doesn't allow him to be pushed around,[12] his mighty power second to none,[6] compared to have more strength than a 12-gauge steam train,[13] with speed to match too.[14] His swings are a thing of heroic proportions,[15] advising anyone to not get in his way.[16] As a result of that strength, Donkey Kong prides himself of this power.[17][18] Despite his pride, Donkey Kong is compassionate, easy-going, and a friendly person,[19][20] though a bit absentminded and scatterbrained,[8][14] knowing to get bored of long talks.[11]

Donkey Kong loves bananas[8] - he often wears neckties as a sign of his dedication towards the fruit[5] - but his steady diet of bananas has gained him some weight.[21] Despite living lazy and carefree, even taking breaks from partying,[22] Donkey Kong is known to fly in a fit of rage whenever things don't go his way, like having his bananas messed with or not getting the opportunity to get a Mini-Mario toy.[23][24] Whenever his strength doesn't get him what he wants, he resorts to retreating into himself, crying, and throwing a temper tantrum.[25] Naturally, the only way to get him back in a good mood is to reward him, either via bananas or giving him what he wants.[19] He's also a deep sleeper, sometimes sleeping through his watch.[26]

It's said he also raps,[12] loves swinging on vines,[27] and ever since he had discovered the bongos in Donkey Konga, he's been making jungle music on his island.[21]
