Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix was the retrieval, then usage of the Music Keys to make everyone dance with the music in their souls.

History

Waluigi breaks the seal of Truffle Towers and enters inside to discover the Music Keys, four spheres that hold the power of music, which were held there for safekeeping. Waluigi spreads the Music Keys but holds one in order to cause rhythmless chaos to the masses, in which case he will hypnotize them with his moves and become the best dancer in the world.[1][2]

Toad notices what is happening inside Truffle Towers and, worried chaos and discord will rain down the Mushroom Kingdom and destroy them all, runs over to Mario or Luigi for help.[3] The Mario Bros. accepts the offer and heads to Truffle Towers.

World 1

The path to Truffle Towers is rife with danger such as flooded rivers, being blasted into the underground filled with Goombas, and saving a Lakitu's carrot garden from being trampled by young Koopa Troopas.[4][5][6] But thanks to harnessing the power of dancing, Mario or Luigi can safely cross towards Truffle Towers, where they encounter Waluigi.[7] A dance-off for Waluigi's Music Key ensues, which they manage to win despite the Bob-ombs being included in the mix.

It is now time to journey out across the Mushroom Kingdom to find the three other Music Keys. The SS Brass, a flying airship, will help in this regard.[8]

World 2

Their journey toward the second Music Key has a cyclone suddenly appear, catching it in its storm and making the ship turn Toadette's hotel into a twisty mess, but it was thankfully returned to its original form thanks to the power of dance.[9] As thanks, Toadette tells them where she saw the second Music Key, so they drift off towards the sea but are then caught into a whirlpool created by the Music Key.[10][11] They escape it and take refuge on an island nearby. At Pirate's Plunder, they win the Boogie Booster by having a fishing duel against the Lakitu shopkeeper.[12]

With the Boogie Booster added to the SS Brass, they can now safely enter the whirlpool and swim underwater. Following the beat underwater, they reach a ruined temple at the bottom of the sea.[13] Dancing against the Big Blooper housed inside the temple, they nab the second Music Key and swim away.

World 3

It falls into nighttime, and the SS Brass reaches a large theme park that Toad bets holds the third Music Key. They are stopped by a couple of dancing Hammer Bros., but are then allowed to pass through.[14][15] Toad's guess was correct, as Wario is then seen riding a rollercoaster with a Music Key in hand. Wario flees inside the haunted mansion attraction, and the two dance through a group of Boos. The chase to Wario continues, and a Chain Chomp suddenly appeared to also give chase.[16]

Reaching the ferris wheel with no way out, Wario reveals his plan with the Music Key is to use it for the newest attraction in his theme park; DDR: Wario Mix; an exploration of greed, stench, and stubby legs through interpretive dance.[17] Reacting negatively to Toad and Mario/Luigi's groan at his plan, Wario pulls a dance fight for the Music Key. The third Music Key is obtained and the SS Brass flies off with only one Music Key left to obtain.

World 4

The intense blizzard causes the SS Brass some trouble, meaning they have to travel on foot.[18] They discover the fourth Music Key is hidden inside a large Freezie. The direct climb above is too slippery, so they take a detour by going through an underground cave. After waiting inside a cabin for the storm to clear, an avalanche occurs but was no problem for the climb upwards.[19]

Using hot moves, the Freezie at the top eventually melts enough for the Music Key to be collected.[20] Sliding downwards, another avalanche occurs which requires some dancing to stay far away from it. They safely land back with the SS Brass, all Music Keys in tow.

Heading back to Truffle Towers, Toad is knocked dazed by an unknown individual; someone has taken all of the Music Keys. This individual revealed himself to be none other than Bowser.[21] Because one of the Mario Bros. and Toad were out there collecting all of the Music Keys, Bowser only had to wait to then nab all of them in one go before retreating back to his castle. Taking the SS Brass, the duo heads all the way to Bowser's Castle.

World 5

Immediate retaliation from Bowser in the form of Bullet Bills hounds the SS Brass, which the ship dodges with perfection with the power of dancing.[22] Arriving at Bowser's Castle, Bowser is quick with attempting to harness the power of the Music Keys. But the duo were quicker at the draw, nabbing all of them in time.

The final dance battle occurs against Bowser. Bowser had smooth moves, but the rockets built to flatten and then smash Bowser outside the castle's walls proved to be more powerful.[23] Bowser falls over in defeat and reveals what he wanted to do with the Music Keys; fix his tone deafness.[24] In response to this, Mario/Luigi decides to use the power of the Music Keys to plant a little music into everyone's souls, making the world a happier place. Everyone then dances to the music in their soul.
