Banshee Boardwalk is a haunted area that made its debut as a racetrack in Mario Kart 64 as the third course of the Special Cup. It later was reused in Mario Kart DS as the second course of the Lightning Cup.
Description
- “A dark and mysterious boardwalk over water is the location for this course. At the corners, some guardrails are missing, making its design quite rough. At the old building that you pass through along the way, try not to run into the large army of bats.”
- —Instruction card, Mario Kart 64[1]
Banshee Boardwalk is, as its name suggests, a boardwalk haunted by the Boos that surround this place. The walkway is situated ontop of a misty pond, barely lit up by the wooden lampposts that ring above the road.
The only building the boardwalk leads in and out of rests on a rock and is long abandoned, with broken wooden floorboards, grey/red brick walls, and support beams holding a ceiling that's no longer there. The only history left inside the building is a coffin-like opening and a steel grating opening, both of which house an army of Swoops. Whether it was placed recently or during, the fractured wooden sign at the entrance reads "WELCOME" under a dripping red color.
Besides the Swoops, the only other living being in this area is a large Cheep Chomp that will occasionally rise out of the water and above the boardwalk.
History
Described as "mysterious", both the boardwalk and building are described to be old.
This boardwalk was used as the third course in the Mario Kart 64 Special Cup. Afterward, in Mario Kart DS, it made its appearance as the second course in the Lightning Cup.
During Mario Kart DS, a mission took place where Luigi had to hit 10 Item Boxes within 65 seconds. While driving through the wooden road, Luigi had to figure out which Item Box were real and which ones were fake. Luckily, Luigi managed to finish the mission.
Placement
- This track has a lot in common with the Ghost Valley courses from Super Mario Kart. The wooden flooring of the track, the Boos that float ontop of the racers, and even this course track samples parts of those courses' music. This implies a connection between the two courses.
- Mario Kart: Super Circuit's Boo Lake and Broken Pier are both run-down wooden tracks inhabited by Boos. The names of both tracks suggest they're both situated above a body of water as well, providing a thematic connection between tracks.
