Abstract

The ending cutscene of the Nintendo Switch/3DS version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, as well as multiple elements, if not the entireties, of the Super Mario Odyssey Kingdoms stages should be considered non-canon, with the Wii U version’s ending cutscene and ''Expedition to the Sprixie Kingdom'' stages remaining as the canon version of events. This theory is mainly based on the fact that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker's Super Mario Odyssey content directly contradicts Super Mario Odyssey itself at multiple points. Said instances will be brought up in the arguments below.

Arguments

  • Argument 1: In the Nintendo Switch/3DS ending cutscene of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Captain Toad and Toadette set off in a minecart from Wingo’s Whackdown, which takes place in a location that’s located on the same island as the Mushroom Kingdom.[1] When the minecart arrives at its destination, the two Toads find themselves in the Sand Kingdom. This is in direct conflict with Super Mario Odyssey, which shows that the Sand Kingdom is on a completely different continent to the Mushroom Kingdom.
Captain Toad and Toadette's trip to the Sand Kingdom in the Nintendo Switch/3DS ending of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
  • Argument 2: When Captain Toad and Toadette arrive in the Sand Kingdom in the Nintendo Switch/3DS ending of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, it is night time. They then see the Odyssey flying overhead. In Super Mario Odyssey, the Odyssey’s initial flight between the Cascade and Sand Kingdoms happens during the day time and Mario arrives in the Sand Kingdom itself during the day as well.

  • Argument 3: In Super Mario Odyssey we saw that the Toad Brigade was travelling the world with Captain Toad and had set up a Crazy Cap shop in the Starshroom, while Toadette remained in the Mushroom Kingdom. This doesn’t line up with the Nintendo Switch/3DS ending of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, where Toadette was stranded in the Sand Kingdom and the Brigade and Starshroom were seen in the Mushroom Kingdom minutes earlier.[2]

  • Argument 4: In the Nintendo Switch/3DS ending of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Captain Toad sees the the Odyssey and runs after it, despite the fact that he shouldn’t recognise it at that point, as that trip from the Cascade Kingdom to the Sand Kingdom is stated to be the Odyssey’s maiden voyage in Super Mario Odyssey.
Captain Toad recognising and running after the Odyssey in the Nintendo Switch/3DS ending of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (left) and Cappy stating that this is the Odyssey's maiden voyage in Super Mario Odyssey (right).
  • Argument 5: In Super Mario Odyssey, Captain Toad first met Mario in the Cascade Kingdom. This is clearly indicated through both the Captain’s dialogue and the fact that he will always spawn in Fossil Falls before Mario can leave for the Sand Kingdom.[3] This conflicts with the Nintendo Switch/3DS ending of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, in which Mario has already left the Cascade Kingdom by the time Captain Toad begins to chase Mario, as well as the Bonus Episode level order, where Secret of the Inverted Pyramid happens prior to Mine Cart Cascade Crusade.[4]
  • NOTE: While Captain Toad’s “First Meeting” dialogue can be triggered in some other kingdoms (for example, the Metro Kingdom), the Sand Kingdom is not one of them.
Captain Toad's dialogue upon meeting Mario for the first time during the events of Super Mario: Odyssey.
  • Argument 6: In Super Mario Odyssey, when Mario meets Captain Toad in the Metro Kingdom, Captain Toad gives Mario a Power Moon which he states he found inside a building. Mario is also the one to restart the New Donk City Power Plant in Super Mario Odyssey. This is contradicted by the Nintendo Switch/3DS Bonus Episode level of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, “Uptown, Downtown”, where the Power Moon Captain Toad collects in New Donk City is in a park, not a building, and Captain Toad is the one to restart the Power Plant.[5]

  • Argument 7: Toadette appears in New Donk City hall in Uptown, Downtown, which conflicts with Super Mario Odyssey, where she’s in the Mushroom Kingdom. Hint Toad is also seen there, away from his usual point close to where the Odyssey parks, and the City Hall is otherwise empty despite it being inhabited by New Donkers and other races throughout Super Mario Odyssey.[6]

  • Argument 8: Both the stages Secret of the Inverted Pyramid and Uptown, Downtown, which clearly depict downscaled versions of the Odyssey locations “Tostarena” and “New Donk City”, respectively, are significantly downscaled. The levels are too small when compared to the characters and various items/objects found in them. While this could be chalked up to a design decision, the Expedition to the Sprixie Kingdom levels from the Bonus Episode of the Wii U version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker kept the original scale of the levels they were based on intact.

  • Argument 9: The events of Secret of the Inverted Pyramid, specifically where Captain Toad causes the titular pyramid to rise and float in the air, conflict with Super Mario Odyssey, where Mario was the one who caused the Inverted Pyramid to rise.[7]
