The Mushroom Retainers are seven Toads who serve in Princess Peach's court. Toad is a member of this group.[1]

As their name implies, they're appointed to help retain the Mushroom Kingdom government.

History

Super Mario Bros.

As part of Bowser's invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom, all seven of the mushroom retainers were kidnapped and held hostage in separate castles, guarded by Fake Bowsers.[2]

Mario and Luigi's adventure through the 8 worlds lead them to save all of the toad retainers from their entrapment, who reminded the duo that Princess Peach wasn't at their castle.[3]

Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels

The seven mushroom retainers were kidnapped again with Peach, joining her in being sent to a parallel world under even tighter control by Bowser's forces.[4] Mario and Luigi arrived to save all seven of the mushroom retainers again.

Mario the Juggler

In this title, the Mushroom Retainers pester Mario to juggle. Suddenly, Hammer Bros. and then a single Lakitu show up at where they were. They watch from a distance Mario juggle and eventually ask them to join in, approaching them in a friendly manner for the first time ever. Every time Mario lets an item he was juggling fall, a Retainer ridicule him.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Six of the mushroom retainers were present at the Mushroom Castle during Smithy's invasion.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Six retainers were present during the visit of the Goodwill Ambassador from the Beanbean Kingdom, who turned out to be Cackletta and Fawful in disguise.[5] When Cackletta removed her disguise, she blasted away all of the retainers to steal the voice of who she believed was Peach, but was actually Birdo.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

Five mushroom retainers were gathered to discuss the blorbs epidemic rampant throughout the Mushroom Kingdom.[6] The meeting at the castle's conference hall was prematurely cut short due to Bowser's interruption.
